PSP-2000 Tops 100,000 in Japan
September 22, 2007 – While our attention was turned to the Makuhari Messe in Chiba for the start of the Tokyo Game Show this past week, Sony released the PSP-2000 to the Japanese market. The system hit shops on Thursday, available in six colors, each costing 19,800 yen. Also available that day was a highly anticipated 1seg tuner, which turns the slimline PSP into a television.
So how did the system do? Sony Computer Entertainment announced on Friday that system managed actual sales of 130,000 units on its first day. This, according to the company, is a new high mark for the system following launch.
In addition, the company states that 30% of PSP-2000 buyers picked up a 1seg tuner. The attachment only works with the new system; owners of older PSP models are left out.
The official release of the PSP-2000 was preceded the week before by a limited edition model that was bundled with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. That model sold upwards of 65,000 units, pretty much disappearing from retail in its first day of sales.
The figures release today aren’t the standard sales figures that Enterbrain and Media Create provide every week. We expect to have a better picture of how well the new PSP is doing once those independent figures are available next week.
