Well it’s been about two weeks since the worst kept secret in the gaming industry was made official. I am of course referring to the new UMD less Sony PSP Go. Even though the news for this new PSP sku was out of the box before the official word it is still a welcome edition to the PSP line up. To me the biggest reason why the new PSP Go is such a welcome edition is not for the actual hardware but what it brings to the gaming table in terms of software and the giant digital downloading door that Sony is finally opening!
More important than this slick little piece of PSP hardware is the fact that it has no UMD and Sony will finally be going to digital download for their PSP titles. I have my trusty PSP 3000 which I am perfectly happy with and will keep for quite a while. I will however be very happy to never have to purchase a UMD disk ever again.
Now honestly what do you think will happen to the UMD format over the next few years? Do you really think that Sony will continue to support this format once they open up the digital download service and all the developers are on board with it? There are already rumors swirling around Sony that they will bringing their own version of an App store to the PSN. Apps that will not be restricted to just games but other functions as well ala the Apple app store. The word has it that developers are being encouraged to bring other non gaming apps to the table that should be available for download by the end of this year.
Now this to me is the best news we have heard for the PSP format since the beginning. I think you will see the PSP 3000 especially start to fly off the shelves now that and App store is coming and the games are going digital. I say the PSP 3000 because I am not to sure about he price point for the PSP Go, at $249 for what is basically a fancy PSP 3000. I just don’t see spending that extra money for all the same features just on a smaller scale.
